There are 3 types of thermal energy: conduction, convection, and radiation.
Conduction: Heat transfer between objects that are touching.
Example 1: The bottom of a pan on the stove gets warm when the stove is truened on
Example 2: Hugging your best friend
Convection: Heat transfer in a fluid/air-hot air rises and cold air sinks
Example 3: Convection currents in the mantel of the Earth cause the plates to move
Example 4: It is warmer in the attic of a house and colder in the basement
Radiation: Heat transfer from electromagnetic waves
Example 5: Sitting in the sun you start to sweat
Example 6: You are sitting with your back to a window where the sun is shining and you feel the heat on you
